About This Project
The Kulkarni family came to me with a newly purchased 3BHK flat in Baner — bare concrete walls, no flooring, no partitions — and a clear brief: they wanted a home that felt warm and contemporary without being overly formal. They have two children, host family regularly, and both work from home several days a week.
The key challenge was creating distinct zones — a proper study for both adults, a play-friendly living area for the children, a kitchen that could handle serious cooking and weekend entertaining — all within a moderate budget, without the home ever feeling cramped or compromised.
We started with a full space planning exercise, revisiting the original builder layout and making several meaningful changes: the study was carved out of the master bedroom as a semi-open nook with sliding doors, the living and dining were opened up further by removing a low partition wall, and a breakfast counter was added to the kitchen to make the morning routine faster and more social.

Design Approach
The colour palette was anchored in warm whites and soft beige tones, with natural oak veneer on all the joinery — wardrobes, TV unit, kitchen shutters, and the study shelving. This created visual consistency across all rooms without the home feeling repetitive. Strategic use of forest green in the master bedroom and a terracotta accent wall in the children’s room gave each space its own character while staying connected to the whole.
Lighting was designed in three layers in every room: ambient (recessed downlights on dimmers), task (reading lights above the bed, under-cabinet kitchen lighting), and accent (cove lighting in the living, a statement pendant over the dining table). The result is a home that can shift from bright and energetic in the morning to warm and intimate in the evening with a few dimmer adjustments.
